The Cwm Festivals started in August 2004, born out of momentum that had built up from Utrophia’s events program. Named after the first location ‘Cwm Cowarch’, a valley set in the foothills of Southern Snowdonia, the festival combines and celebrates the yearly activities of an ever expanding and evolving network.

For the first festival, Utrophia brought together the network that had evolved from monthly events at the ‘Time bar’, The 291 Gallery and the newly realised ‘Utrophia Project Space’. We were able to co-ordinate three days of live music, film, performance and food. Taking what had evolved within urban London, now placed within the rural settings of this valley, allowed for a renewed and recontextialised perspective upon the network and how it could operate. The festival was free of charge and was made possible by the collective efforts of  everyone who attended.

The unique way in which this three day event came into being, highlighted the strength of networks and created a strong foundation for how future Cwm Festivals, as well as regular Utrophia events could be realised. Since then the Utrophia Project Space, Norfolk and Utrophia’s Deptford Properly Cafe, the Mindsweeper and Deptford High Street, have all been utilised as locations for the yearly Cwm festival.

Imaginitive, welcoming, innovative, dynamic and inclusive the festivals are well respected for their diverse and open attitude to performance and expression.
