DIY DEPTFORD

FULL WEBSITE COMING SOON...

Here's where it all started...

Stemming from home grown, grass roots, initiatives typically Utrophian (www.utrophia.net/projects/DIY-Utrophia) DIY Deptford is a Transition Towns initiative that combines artistic and sustainability practices.

Noticing that the ethics and financial position of how we run our arts network and project space, are at many times championing parallel life choices high lighted by sustainable and environmental initiatives, we decided to explore and make a thing of art the similarities.

As a project, this merely aims to highlight and document initiatives put in place at the project space, that serve to improve and aid its running and creatively reinvent how the space operates as a community arts venue.

The more the space succeeds in exemplifying creatively the DIY nature of local improvement and highlighting community solutions for adapting to shifting global economy, the more we can aid in Deptford becoming a Transition Town.

Becoming a Transition Town means aiding Deptford to move from a local economy based on things imported from all over the world, to getting people to start thinking locally and getting things produced in Deptford.

So far we have explored local currency, food growing, energy production, wine making and central heating which has lead to the first event for this project DIY Deptford Action Group of the People Enrolment Centre which was part of 2010s Deptford X festival.

We hope to continue this work and have another event in 2011 which will be bigger and better and getting more people on board.
