Fuck Off Batman
We came into touch with Hugh many times along the years. With his legendary nights at the Klinker in Dalston and then down South as well, as well as his connections with Now.
We asked him to play the Cwm Fourth to Deptford Properly festival and it was great. He regailed people with deconstructed compositions which told of outrage and moral outlooks on modern day life.
Here's Hugh's 'Jazz Services' Biography:
Hugh Metcalfe, idiosyncratic musician and promoter of London's longest-running improvised music/poetry/performance club, The Klinker, formed the Microtonal Megastars trio two years ago. His aim was to complement his other playing and promotional activities, and to explore improvisation across a range of moods and references from humour and pastiche through to sustained tone colours, textures and unguarded, expressive lyricism. Distinctive in the performances is Hugh's own exploration of 'microtonal' playing (72 pitches within an octave) and his use of poly-rhythms. The resulting mix of references and suggestions offers a fresh and challenging direction within improvised music and performance, sometimes linked with Hugh's experimental film-making.
