The Marching Band

Julian Woodward in 2005, The Marching Band is a 12-part ensemble consisting of Trumpet, Cornet, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo, Sax,
Trombone, Glockenspiel, Triangle, Snare, Cymbal, Bassdrum. The first march formed part of Utrophia's
second Cwm festival. It since went on to perform countless marches through locations as diverse as Oxford Street, Elephant and Castle, Norfolk, Clapton Pond, Soho, Docklands, and many more ! Each march culminates with an impromptu ensemble at a (usually disused) bandstand where each performer takes a turn to do a solo in the middle, with the band members (marching on the spot) forming a semi-circle around the perimeter of the bandstand.
The concept was in part inspired by Mobile-Clubbing, and intended to be a kind of flash-mob, albeit a well-prepared one. Thus the effect depends on the rather surreal quality of the unexpected, the unannounced, the 'what the..?...what for..?' Well, for fun god damn it! Praise the lord !
It is intended to elaborate on the performance by adopting multiple formations (devised by Inigo 'Formations' Minns) during different stages of the march, but as this requires ensemble rehearsal it has not developed very much so far.
All the music is written and arranged by Julian Woodward, apart from 'March Sharpus' which is by Chris Irish.
