'bye bye babel!' : ann-marie had her short film 'bye bye babel!' shown at utrophia's october event, to great response. in great juxtaposition to the dj sets that came prior to it's showing the silent film commanded an instant presence. lush choreographed dance routines, with a beautiful blonde central character dancing in front of a bowling ally, instantly denoting the 1950's american 'rock and roll' myth, ran through silent and subtitled with the 'to be or not to be' soliloquy from hamlet. the techni-coloured 'light entertainment', juxtaposed with weighty literary catharsis creates an interesting effect, at first jarring but then merging, whereby each element becomes recognisable as being incredible heavily overused. each are examples of high and low culture which via being mediated en masse become one and the same thing, engulfing and assimilating though not reducing, just each examples of the human condition.
