'fractal dread' was shown at utrophia's night at the 291 gallery on 29.05.03.
'fractal dread explores the recursive textures of black hair. african mathematics discovered the implicate folds, twists and splitting of nature centuries before western sciences of chaos and complexity. recent research in ethno-mathematics has revealed the abstract fractal-patterning (self-similarity irrelevant of scale) of black hairstyles as a predecessor of the networked fields of computer culture. the wired dreadshpere of twisted, folded and looped strands of hair undoes the progressivist history of science, placing africa in ot the futureinstead of primivitist degree zero of linear civilization.
in the video, these abstract patterns migrate inot the flickering folds of vision, the rhythmic crackle of electrostatic and the tactile, almost imperceptible dark matter of sub bass.
